Interview

If you make a strong application to Oxford or Cambridge, you will be invited to interview. Interviews are conducted virtually, and while the exact structure varies, students will typically have 2-3 Maths interviews.

It is our conviction that the best way to prepare for these interviews is to replicate the experience as closely as possible through Oxbridge Maths mock interviews. All of our Maths mock interviews are conducted by Oxbridge Maths tutors, graduates, and students.

Each session is 60 minutes, with 45 minutes spent on the interview portion, and 15 minutes on feedback. We have several packages to choose from:

Six interviews (6 hours)

Four interviews (4 hours)

One interview (1 hour)

Below are a selection of questions you can use to prepare yourself for your Maths interviews. Ideally, work through them with a tutor, but failing that, ask a friend or family member to quiz you - it won't be as similar to the real thing, but it will still help you to get accustomed to the unique format and style of Oxbridge Maths interviews.

MAT/STEP/TMUA

All Oxford Maths candidates must sit the MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test). The MAT lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes, and as of 2025, consists of 27 questions. 25 are multiple-choice questions, and there are two longer questions requiring typed responses. Candidates' MAT scores are a major factor in deciding who to invite to interview.

All Cambridge Maths candidates must sit the STEP (Sixth Term Examination Papers). There are two papers: STEP 2 and STEP 3. Each lasts three hours, and consists of twelve questions: eight pure maths questions, two mechanics questions, and two statistics/probability questions. Candidates' STEP scores form a condition of their Cambridge offer. Applicants to Warwick, King's College London, UCL, Durham, Bristol, Southampton, Sheffield, and Lancaster can optionally take the STEP in order to lower their A-Level offer condition.

All Imperial College London Maths candidates must sit the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission). The TMUA lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is divided into two paper. Paper 1 is subtitled 'Applications of Mathematical Knowledge' and assesses your ability to apply your knowledge of mathematics in new situations. Paper 2 is subtitled 'Mathematical Reasoning' and assesses your ability to deal with mathematical reasoning, and simple ideas from elementary logic. Applicants to Warwick almost always sit the TMUA to avoid having to sit the STEP or accept a much harder offer. Applicants to Durham, LSE, Southampton, Sheffield, Nottingham, Lancaster, and Cardiff can optionally take the TMUA in order to lower their A-Level offer condition.

Past papers for these tests are available online, and so the best way to prepare is to work through each past paper, and then go through them with an experienced tutor.

We offer MAT/STEP/TMUA tuition in 90-minute sessions due to the length of these papers.

Oxford provide every MAT past paper since 2007, with solutions, and video solutions from 2016-2020, as well as two specimen papers, and a practice test so that you can familiarise yourself with the test interface. These can all be found here.

Cambridge OCR provide every STEP past paper since 2019, with mark schemes, examiner's reports, and hints. These can be found here.

UAT provide every TMUA past paper since 2016 with worked answers and answer keys, as well as several specimen papers and a sample exam. These can be found here and here.

Personal Statement

A personal statement for Oxbridge or other top UK universities such as Imperial, King's, UCL, or Warwick is unique, in that it has a greater focus on academics, and less reference to extracurriculars.

We tutor students through the writing of their personal statement with our Personal Statement Package. It includes two video sessions (1 hour each), and two further offline reviews. All tuition is carried out by a tutor who studied Maths at a top university themselves, and so they have first-hand knowledge of what makes a successful statement.

If you're lacking inspiration, we have provided below a number of genuine Maths personal statements which led to offers to read Maths at Oxford or Cambridge. As these were written for previous application cycles, they do not adhere to the new UCAS guidelines that say that personal statements must be written as answers to three questions. Nevertheless, they give a useful picture of what an Oxbridge Maths personal statement looks like, and how to discuss books, subjects, and concepts within it.

Testimonials

“Our daughter was tutored by Andrew, the founder of the company, who created an 18-month plan for her application, and then supported her every step of the way. Thanks to him, our daughter is now at Oxford studying Maths.”

Emily W.

“I found all the advice on personal statements and STEP helpful but the interview advice and mock interview I felt was especially helpful as it was the most accurate advice and mock I had to the real thing.”

Samuel P.

“Maths Applications worked around our busy travel schedule to create a tuition plan for our son, and his tutor went above and beyond to answer his questions, discuss ideas with his, and generally boost his confidence. Highly recommend!”

Rachel L.

International Students

Applying for Maths is hard. You must create a compelling personal statement, score highly in the admissions test, and impress tutors in several interviews. This can be especially difficult for international students, with no experience of the UCAS system or the Oxbridge process, and less of a network to rely on.

At Maths Applications, we are very proud to have helped students from all over the world, including the USA, China, and the UAE to study Maths in the UK, working with families as well as schools and educational consultancies around the globe.

If you are based outside of the UK, and want to learn more about studying Maths, get in touch with us at hello@mathsapplications.co.uk or WhatsApp us at +44 20 8156 4942 and we would be happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Us

Maths Applications is a boutique educational consultancy, the only one in the world with a singular focus on applications to study Maths in the UK. This specificity allows us to have deep expertise, and specialist knowledge on relevant readings, Maths personal statements, the MAT/STEP/TMUA, and Oxbridge Maths interviews.

Other educational consultancies aim to cover a near-infinite number of courses and universities, making it difficult for them to offer excellent guidance for any single course, and so they resort to offering generalised advice, and working with random tutors from the internet.

On the other hand, we work each year with a small number of Maths hopefuls from the UK and overseas, and they are mentored one-on-one by our team, which is entirely composed of Maths students and graduates from our network, and so we can prioritise getting the best outcome for applicants for this single course.

At the start of the year, we offer academic mentoring to our students, discussing readings and ideas which will broaden their knowledge of mathematics. We then begin working with them on the MAT/STEP/TMUA, going through past papers and teaching strategies to tackle the tricker questions. Alongside this, we help students with their personal statements, reviewing successive drafts until they're created an impactful statement. Finally, we offer mock interviews, each with a different tutor, so that our students are confident and experienced going into the real thing.
